Nissan is known for making cars that are fun to drive, and for more than 30 years the company's NISMO (Nissan Motorsports) division has added its own special touch to numerous models. The 2017 Nissan Sentra NISMO is the latest recipient of that racetrack-inspired attention.

Made for Performance

The fun starts with the standard 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. Packed with high-tech features such as continuously variable valve timing, direct fuel injection, mirror-finished cylinder bores, and a quick-spooling, low-inertia turbocharger, the four-cylinder engine produces 188 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque.

This is a significant boost over the 130 hp and 128 lb-ft delivered by the base Sentra engine - yet still delivers up to 31 mpg on the highway.

Like many sporty cars, the Sentra NISMO comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission. However, Nissan also offers an optional Xtronic CVT transmission, which combines the ease of use of an automatic with a manual shifting mode when you want to be in full control of the driving experience.

Sports Car-Inspired Handling

Sportiness is more than just power, of course; it also comes from the way the car feels on the road. For the Sentra NISMO, the engineers specified stiffer springs and shock absorbers, along with a lower ride height and unique 18-inch aluminum wheels with wider 215-series tires, for better handling and responsiveness.

The car's chassis received additional bracing to cope with the increased cornering forces, while the larger vented front brake discs and upgraded brake pads enhance stopping ability. Standard Vehicle Dynamic Control with Traction Control and ABS maximize both safety and performance.

Classic NISMO Exterior

In order to make this special Sentra stand out on the street, the designers specified a stylish new set of clothes. The makeover begins with aggressive front and rear bumpers and side skirts, all wearing NISMO's signature red stripe. The front grill is exclusive to the model, as are the rear spoiler and LED daytime running lights. (The headlights also utilize extra-bright LED technology.) The black outside mirrors with integrated turn signals handsomely contrast with the exterior chrome trim, which includes the door handles, trunk finisher, and exhaust tips.

The Sentra NISMO's occupants are treated to their own exclusive show. The front sport seats feature large bolsters and grippy Alcantara (a high-end synthetic suede) center sections to hold the driver and passenger firmly in place in the bends. There's more Alcantara on the steering wheel, along with a bold red stripe at the top of the rim, and matching red accents or stitching on the front and rear seats, center console, and tachometer - another classic NISMO touch.

Premium Interior Completes the Package

The sporty feel continues with carbon-fiber trim on the doors and center console, as well as a push button to start the engine. Nissan didn't skip on comfort, either; Bluetooth and USB connectivity are standard, while the optional Premium Package adds hands-free NissanConnect with Navigation and an 8-speaker Bose sound system with two subwoofers.

Inside and out, the Sentra NISMO looks and feels like no other Sentra. It's a perfect addition to the NISMO tradition.
